The Start of Burger Season

Memorial Day has come and gone, meaning here in New England it is officially summer. With summer comes long, hot days at the beach, ice cold lemonade, and of course barbecues. My family finished a renovation of our screen porch and our first dinner to celebrate its completion was burgers and potato salad after a scorching hot May day. My personal favorite burger is a simple turkey burger with a slice of cheddar cheese, a couple slices of fresh tomatoes and a perfectly grilled bun. Of course, I also add a little bit of red tomato ketchup to finish it off.

On the other hand, my dad, the grillmaster prefers a juicy beef burger with a little bit of everything. It’s usually a mix of ketchup, mustard, slices of red onion, lettuce, tomatoes, and to top it off: pickles. Caroline Lange from Food 52 agrees that the toppings are what truly makes the burger. She compiled a list of 17 delicious toppings, which I may have to try at my next barbecue as a step up from my typical dinner. Here’s just a few she mentions, to see the rest of the list, click here.

  1. Cucumber and Shiso Pickles
  2. Hot Pickled Peppers
  3. Stuart Brioza's Mushrooms in Pickle-Brine Butter
  4. Brown Butter Tomatoes
  5. Bacon Jam
